DRD2, also known as the dopamine D2 receptor, and by other names such as D2 dopamine receptor or Dopamine D2 receptor, is a type of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) encoded by the human gene DRD2. It is primarily expressed in the brain, particularly in areas like the basal ganglia. The mechanism of action for DRD2 primarily involves binding to dopamine and other ligands, which inhibits adenylate cyclase activity through G proteins, thereby affecting the levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and the activity of protein kinase A (PKA) within cells.
DRD2 is involved in regulating multiple physiological processes, including motor control, cognitive function, and emotional responses. The activity of DRD2 is closely associated with the development of various diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, Tourette syndrome, and drug addiction. Additionally, DRD2 is a target for several drugs, including antipsychotics and some medications used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Studies have shown that certain mutations in DRD2 may be related to dystonia.
