IL15RA, also known as Interleukin 15 Receptor Alpha, and by other names such as CD215, IL-15R alpha, or IL-15 receptor subunit alpha, is a protein encoded by the IL15RA gene. It is a member of the type I cytokine receptor family and is primarily expressed on the surface of various immune cells, such as T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, natural killer T cells (NKT), dendritic cells, and monocytes. The mechanism of action for IL15RA primarily involves binding to IL-15, forming a heterodimer with the IL-2/IL-15Rβ-γc receptor complex, and subsequently activating downstream signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT, PI3K/AKT, and mTOR, promoting the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of immune cells.
IL15RA is involved in the regulation of immune cell development, function, and homeostasis. Expression of IL15RA is crucial for the survival and function of NK cells, NKT cells, and memory CD8+ T cells. Additionally, IL15RA plays a role in regulating inflammatory responses and antitumor immunity. Its abnormal expression or dysfunction is associated with certain diseases, including some types of cancer and autoimmune disorders. Therefore, IL15RA is a potential target in immunological research and the treatment of related diseases.
