The protein encoded by SLC38A2 is sodium-coupled neutral amino acid transporter 2 (SNAT2), a member of the solute carrier family 38. It functions as a sodium-dependent transporter mediating the uptake of small neutral amino acids, including glutamine and alanine, across the plasma membrane. SNAT2 plays a key role in cellular amino acid homeostasis and nutrient sensing, particularly in response to mTOR signaling pathway activation under amino acid-replete conditions.
Aberrant SLC38A2 expression has been linked to cancer progression, as increased SNAT2 activity supports rapid tumor cell proliferation by enhancing amino acid availability. In glioblastoma and breast cancer models, SNAT2 upregulation correlates with tumor growth and resistance to therapy. Preclinical studies are investigating small-molecule inhibitors targeting SNAT2 as potential anticancer agents, aiming to disrupt amino acid supply and suppress mTOR-driven oncogenic pathways.
