Transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) is a type II transmembrane serine protease; its genomic fusion with the ERG transcription factor is a well-characterized hallmark in prostate cancer, though the protein itself has no common alternative aliases. It localizes to the cell surface, cleaving and activating substrates like pro-urokinase plasminogen activator (pro-uPA) and viral envelope proteins, mediating extracellular matrix remodeling and viral entry.
TMPRSS2 contributes to pathways regulating cell migration and viral infection—critical for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus entry into host cells. Clinically, its fusion with ERG drives prostate carcinogenesis. Inhibitors such as camostat mesilate (repurposed from pancreatitis treatment) are being evaluated for blocking viral entry in COVID-19, while targeted therapies against the TMPRSS2-ERG fusion oncoprotein are under development for prostate cancer.

IHC image of CSB-RA981161A0HU diluted at 1:100 and staining in paraffin-embedded human kidney tissue performed on a Leica BondTM system. After dewaxing and hydration, antigen retrieval was mediated by high pressure in a citrate buffer (pH 6.0). Section was blocked with 10% normal goat serum 30min at RT.
