World Autism Awareness Day:
Discoveries & Hope Beyond Diagnosis

World Autism Awareness Day

In December 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating April 2nd of each year, starting from 2008, as "World Autism Awareness Day." The primary purpose of establishing this international day is to enhance global attention to autism and related research, diagnosis, and the individuals affected by autism, emphasizing the importance of early identification and intervention. The theme “Colour” for World Autism Awareness Day 2024 is to honor and cherish the diverse spectrum of abilities and experiences in the autism community.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not a rare condition. According to screening data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in March 2023, approximately 1 in 36 eight-year-old children has autism. The symptoms of autism manifest diversely, ranging from mild delays in language development and repetitive behaviors to severe social impairments. The severity and specific manifestations of symptoms vary for each individual.

Autism is categorized as a neurodevelopmental disorder with an etiology that remains incompletely understood, although research suggests that a complex interplay between genetic factors and environmental influences is likely to underlie its occurrence.

In recent years, scientific research in the field of autism has focused on multiple dimensions including genetics, neurobiology, and immunology, among others, revealing exciting new targets and avenues of study. For instance, beyond the widely recognized monogenic cause of autism exemplified by FMR1 gene mutations, scientists have been concentrating on the associations between SHANK3, NLGN3/4X gene mutations and autism. These genes encode proteins that play pivotal roles in neuronal connections and signal transmission. It has been reported that over 1,000 genes have been implicated in autism, yet most of these genetic links remain unconfirmed. Concurrently, neurotransmitter systems, particularly serotonin and dopamine, have garnered substantial interest and intensive investigation into their roles within the pathogenesis of autism.

CUSABIO consistently dedicates itself to providing high-quality research reagents such as proteins, antibodies, and ELISA kits to researchers. In light of this commitment, we have compiled a list of more than 20 popular targets relevant to autism research along with related reagent products for your selection.
