CA12

CA12, or Carbonic Anhydrase XII, also known as CAXII, CA-XII, or T18816, is an enzyme encoded by a human gene and is a member of the Carbonic Anhydrase (CAs) family. CA12 plays a role in various biological processes, including respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and gastric acid. CA12 regulates pH levels and maintains acid-base balance by catalyzing the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide.
In terms of biological significance, CA12 is a type I membrane protein that is highly expressed in normal tissues such as the kidney, colon, and pancreas, and is overexpressed in 10% of clear cell renal carcinomas. Abnormal expression of CA12 is associated with various diseases, including certain types of cancer and autosomal recessive hyponatremia.
