MIF

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a cytokine mainly secreted by activated T lymphocytes that can inhibit the migration of monocytes. At the same time, monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells in the blood, B cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, mast cells, basophils also express MIF protein. Lipopolysaccharide or cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha, interferon also induce macrophages to express MIF, in addition to the immune system, MIF protein is also expressed in epithelial and endothelial cells of other tissues, such as lung, skin epithelium, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract and other tissues. Under the stimulation of stress factors and endotoxins, MIF can be secreted by anterior pituitary cells along with adrenocorticotropin, and it increases in a time-dependent manner. It can be seen that the cellular sources of MIF are very broad.

MIF is involved in the pathological damage process of various diseases, such as septic shock, pulmonary infection and ulcerative colitis, and is an important regulator of many inflammatory and immune diseases. Recent studies have shown that MIF can also promote tumor invasion and metastasis, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer, by stimulating tumor cell proliferation, changing intercellular adhesion, and inhibiting p53 gene expression. There is high expression of MIF protein in both cells.
