Target Background

Function
Part of the Wnt signaling pathway essential for the specification of the mesodermal cell fate in early embryos. Required for asymmetrical division of somatic gonadal precursor descendants which initiate axis formation required to control organ shape. Similarly, involved in asymmetrical division of seam cells, a stem cell-like lineage. Represses expression of target genes via its interaction with hda-1 histone deacetylase. Required for specification of the M lineage-derived coelomocyte and sex myoblast fate. Regulates coelomocyte fate by positively regulating proliferation and ceh-34 and possibly eya-1 expression in M.dlpa and M.drpa precursors.
Gene References into Functions
  1. these results indicate that SYS-1 and POP-1 levels are influenced by the parent cell's SYS-1/POP-1 levels and this may provide an additional mechanism by which POP-1 regulates distinct targets in different developmental contexts. PMID: 26488501
  2. we demonstrate that POP-1 (the C. elegans TCF) also activates target genes through HMG and Helper site interactions. PMID: 24516405
  3. SYS-1 and POP-1 nuclear levels are regulated in opposite directions; the C terminus of POP-1 is essential for LIT-1 phosphorylation and is specifically bound by the diverged beta-catenin WRM-1 PMID: 21852394
  4. Animals with reduced function of the Wnt-pathway downstream effector POP-1 have as many as 67 seam cells. The 'Wnt/beta-catenin asymmetry' pathway is required for the proper stem cell-like asymmetric division of seam cells. PMID: 20849842
  5. Study suggests that pop-1 is not critical for mesoderm specification beyond repression of endoderm specification, and reveals that Wnt-modified pop-1 further reinforces endoderm specification by repressing mesoderm fate in endoderm. PMID: 19818340
  6. acetylation enhances nuclear retention of POP-1, the Caenorhabditis elegans LEF/TCF homolog, through increasing nuclear import and blocking nuclear export PMID: 12651889
  7. Wnt/MAPK signaling downregulates POP-1 levels in responsive cells, in part by increasing nuclear LIT-1 levels, thereby increasing POP-1 phosphorylation and PAR-5-mediated nuclear export. PMID: 15066285
  8. The Wnt effector POP-1 and the PAL-1/Caudal homeoprotein collaborate with SKN-1 to activate C. elegans endoderm development. PMID: 16084508
  9. TCF protein, POP-1, converts from repressor to activator as a result of Wnt-induced lowering of nuclear levels. PMID: 16112103
  10. POP-1/TCF and SYS-1/beta-catenin directly activate transcription of ceh-22/nkx2.5 isoforms in somatic gonadal precursor distal daughter cells. PMID: 16461282
  11. The Wnt effector POP-1, its coactivator SYS-1/beta-catenin, and of upstream components including beta-catenin WRM-1 causes all SGP daughters to adopt the proximal fate. PMID: 16890160
  12. Reciprocal asymmetry of SYS-1/beta-catenin and POP-1/TCF controls asymmetric divisions in Caenorhabditis elegans. PMID: 17296929
  13. There are two genetic pathways, one increasing SYS-1 and the other decreasing POP-1 levels, robustly elevate the SYS-1-to-POP-1 ratio in the posterior cell, thereby driving A-P differential cell fates. PMID: 17567664
  14. Integration of Wnt-dependent and Wnt-independent cell fate specification pathways within the Caenorhabditis genus can occur in different ways. PMID: 18977344
