Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a class III intermediate filament (IFs) specifically expressed in the cytoplasm of central nervous system astrocytes (AS). It acts as an astrocyte-specific marker.
Glial fibrous acidic protein is found in the brains of people with multiple sclerosis (MS).The GFAP gene was subsequently cloned in mouse and human.
The GFAP gene has alternative splicing, which causes multiple transcriptional variants to encode different protein subtypes. Ten GFAP splicing isomers are known to be expressed in the nervous systems of mouse and human. There are a total of 10 GFAP splice isoforms expressed in the mouse and human nervous systems: GFAP GFAPα, β, γ, δ, ζ, κ, ∆exon 7, ∆135, ∆164, ∆exon6 and ∆exon 7.
GFAP is involved in intracellular cytoskeletal reorganization, cell adhesion, maintenance of myelination and neuronal structure in the brain, involvement in the formation of the blood-brain barrier, and regulation of synapses. It is also involved in cell migration, movement and mitosis.

IHC image of CSB-RA009369MA1HU diluted at 1:300 and staining in paraffin-embedded human brain tissue performed on a Leica BondTM system. After dewaxing and hydration, antigen retrieval was mediated by high pressure in a citrate buffer (pH 6.0). Section was blocked with 10% normal goat serum 30min at RT. Then primary antibody (1% BSA) was incubated at 4°C overnight. The primary is detected by a Goat anti-Mouse IgG labeled by HRP and visualized using 0.05% DAB.
Immunofluorescence staining of SH-SY5Y cell with CSB-RA009369MA1HU at 1:200, counter-stained with DAPI. The cells were fixed in 4% formaldehyde and blocked in 10% normal Goat Serum. The cells were then incubated with the antibody overnight at 4C. The secondary antibody was FITC-conjugated AffiniPure Goat Anti-Mouse IgG(H+L).
