SERPINE1

SERPINE1, serine protease inhibitor family E member 1, alias PAI-1, PLANH1. It is a secreted glycoprotein encoded by the human gene SERPINE1, a member of the serine protease inhibitor superfamily, which is mainly produced in vascular endothelial cells but can also be secreted in other tissues such as adipose tissue.
The main mechanism of action of SERPINE1 is to regulate the coagulation and fibrinolytic system by inhibiting the activities of urokinase and tissue-type plasminogen activator (uPA and tPA).
SERPINE1 is involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, including fibrinolysis, fibrosis, angiogenesis, wound healing, and tumor cell invasion and metastasis. Aberrant SERPINE1 expression has been associated with a variety of diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, asthma, major depressive disorder, and aging-related disorders, and has been linked to a propensity for thrombosis.
