CHIKV Overview

Chikungunya Virus

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Alphavirus genus of the Togaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. CHIKV research covers viral entry and replication, virus–host interactions, host immune responses, neutralizing antibodies, vaccine research and antiviral discovery.

Structural Proteins

CHIKV structural proteins participate in viral particle formation, host-cell attachment, membrane fusion and virion assembly.

  • E2 – receptor interaction and antibody recognition
  • E1 – membrane fusion
  • Capsid – viral RNA packaging
  • E3 / 6K – virion maturation and assembly

Nonstructural Proteins

The four major CHIKV nonstructural proteins form the core machinery required for viral RNA replication.

  • nsP1 – RNA capping and membrane association
  • nsP2 – protease and helicase-associated functions
  • nsP3 – replication and host interactions
  • nsP4 – RNA-dependent RNA polymerase
