Target Background

Function
Receptor for two functionally unrelated ligands; SP (A70A) for controlling reproductive behaviors and MIP for controlling sleep behavior. MIP-SPR pathway functions as a sleep homeostat which perceives the need for sleep and stabilizes it by providing a slow-acting inhibitory input to the fly arousal system that involve the pigment dispersing factor (pdf) neurons. SP-SPR is one of the multiple SP pathways that induce female post-mating behavioral responses (PMR) such as the suppression of mating receptivity and initiation of egg laying. The PMR switch is achieved by mediating the synaptic output of neurons such as those expressing fruitless (fru), double sex (dsx) and pickpocket (ppk).
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data show that female sleep is reduced by male-derived sex Peptide (SP) SP acting through the canonical sex peptide receptor (SPR) within the same neurons responsible for altering other postmating responses (PMRs). PMID: 27658900
  2. Results suggested that the SP/SPR-mediated post-mating responses was established in the lineage of the D. melanogaster species group. PMID: 27230918
  3. SPR peptide modulates female chemosensory processing upon mating in Drosophila. PMID: 27145127
  4. important in stabilizing sleep in both males and females PMID: 25333796
  5. MIPs likely function as ancestral ligands of SPRs and could place evolutionary constraints on the MIP/SPR class. PMID: 20458515
  6. Data show that mating status modulates food choice in females, that it relies on the action of the sex peptide receptor in sensory neurons, and that neuronal TOR/S6K function affects this decision, possibly signaling the fly's current nutritional status. PMID: 20471268
  7. females that lack the sex peptide receptor (SPR, also known as CG16752), either entirely or only in the nervous system, fail to respond to SP and continue to show virgin behaviours even after mating PMID: 18066048
  8. acts in the female flies to detect male Sex-peptide and trigger increased egg laying and reduced sexual receptivity PMID: 18334196

Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
G-protein coupled receptor 1 family
Tissue Specificity
In the female, expressed in the reproductive organs; strongly expressed in the spermathecae and the lower oviduct. No expression in the male reproductive organs. In the central nervous system of both sexes, it is expressed in the brain and ventral nerve c
